John Rogers

John was born “barely” in Saskatchewan, at Uranium City General Hospital and did most of his growing up North of Prince Albert SK. He moved “south” in his late teens where he met his wife of over 20 years. He has been a Journeymen Electrician since 2000, working mostly in Commercial and Industrial Electrical construction in Western Canada.

John has been interested in hunting and firearms since he could walk. He started Reloading at 8yrs old and has never shot a big game animal with factory ammunition. John learned how to make his own ammunition from his father but didn’t really “learn” how to handload until his father-in-law showed him what a ladder test was, in the late ‘90s.

John’s interest in firearms has grown from utility (a tool for hunting) to an interest in firearms for sport and gaming. The internal and external ballistics of firearms appeal to John’s OCD nature so he has become a bit of a mad scientist. Constantly playing different calibers and powder/bullet combinations. Throw in a pinch of wildcatting and its easy to see why John is such a fan of P.O. Ackley and the AI style cartridge. As some indication of “the struggle” John’s wife endures, John has over 50 different reloading die sets, casts his own projectiles, has no less than 6 reloading presses (single stage and progressive) and 2 shot shell presses.

John is trying to instill in his son a healthy interest in firearms. Promoting the safety rules, marksmanship and ethical hunting practices as well as the fundamentals of safe handloading. So far so good, 10 fingers and 10 toes!

John likes all things firearms related he has never met a firearm he didn’t like. Fairly recently, John has become interested in reaching out a little further. You can’t blame it on Curt, but without Rooster’s helpful guidance John would still be struggling to make accurate hits at 600 as opposed to 1400!

John fell in love with the M14 platform in 2008 when he acquired his first M305 at the local Gun Show. He has since turned that into a small (after hours) business,M14 Medic Firearms, tuning and building M14 Pattern rifles. He enjoys the platform and it appeals to his mechanical nature.

John recommends the following books for the firearms enthusiast; Hatchers Notebook by Col. Hatcher, Handbook for Shooter and Reloaders Vol 1 & 2 by PO Ackley, Applied Ballistics For Long Range Shooting by Bryan Lutz, and finally Service Rifles Vol 1&2 by Jerry Kuhnhausen. There are many many more in John’s library, but he considers these to have the most influence on him.

John currently works as an Electrician full time, runs a small business in the evenings/weekends, sits on the board of his local club as Vice President, volunteers his time to the CCFR as a Field Officer as well as to Project Mapleseed as an IIT.
